Date of Death: 9 September 1971, Queensland Buried: Not Known Arthur was the son of George and Dinah Henley. He was single, working as a labourer and living in Burpengary, Queensland, when he enlisted in October 1915. Lance Corporal Henley was awarded a Military Medal for directing his platoon with great boldness and fine leadership under direct observation from an enemy strong point, 200 yards from his front. The attack resulted in the capture of 2 machine guns and 6 prisoners and leaving 4 of the enemy dead. All the time this NCO was under fire from enemy snipers and machine guns at Cappy on 24 August 1918. [Commonwealth Gazette 15 September 1919 p.1364] He also received a Distinguished Conduct Medal for most conspicuous gallantry and determination at Villeret, on 18 September 1918, he twice led his section at enemy strong points, which were holding up the advance. He worked his gun to a flank and bringing fire to bear on the strong point, killed four of the enemy and took ten prisoners. Later, he led a charge against an enemy machine gun, firing his gun from the hip, and captured it, with seven prisoners. [Commonwealth Gazette No.20 dated 19 February 1920]. Arthur returned to Burpengary after the war and he married Ellen Jane Turnbull in 1920. Ellen had been listed as his next of kin on his enlistment papers.Death date09 September 1971
