Francis was the eldest son of James Palmer and Elizabeth Catherine Gorman who resided at the Signal Station, Cowan Cowan, Moreton Island, Queensland. He was 23 years and working as a labourer when he enlisted in February 1915. Francis was hit on the head by a piece of shell on 12 December 1915 at Anzac, invalided from Suez to Australia on 3 March 1916 and discharged on 12 April, 1916. Three younger brothers, James [3170], Richard Gordon Hayes [1789] and Daniel Wallace [2789], also enlisted. Richard was wounded in action at Gallipoli and returned to Australia being discharged the same day as Francis. In June 1917 Daniel was killed in action in Belgium. Francis married Bertha Ellen Lee (also known as Paul) in June 1917 and died under rather tragic circumstances from self-administered poison.
