TitlePaper bales gathered for recyclingDescriptionIn 1957 the Petrie Mill required an average of 18,000 ton of waste paper each year to operate at full capacity. This figure increased as upgrades to Mill equipment resulted in higher levels of production. By 1973 waste paper collection services covered 90% of Brisbane and included both domestic and commercial sites. Collections included 45,000 tons of recyclable material each year. The material was received at the Milton Wastepaper Depot where it was formed into large blocks weighing 900 lb (450kg) before being shipped to Petrie Mill. It was being touted that 15 trees were conserved with each ton of recycled paper. In 1959 the Queensland Charities Wastepaper Appeal was organised by APM. A committee was formed with representatives from Emergency Services, Community Groups and Charities. APM would donate money to the Appeal as payment for the waste paper it collected. In 1984 it was reported that the Appeal had paid $840,000 to over 60 groups and organisations. Records have also been found that by 1977 the Appeal had provided 17 Ambulances to the Q.A.T.B. (Queensland Ambulance Transport Brigade).
