Thomas Evans was born on 14 May 1858 at Portsmouth, Hampshire, England, to parents David Evans and Ann Bailey. He married Rebecca Hitchins Lygo on 25 October 1879 at Gravesend, Kent, England. They were both school teachers. Rebecca was the daughter of Richard Lygo and Martha Harriett Newbald. She was born on 26 June 1856 at Gravesend. Thomas and Rebecca and their four children arrived in Moreton Bay on the Timaru on 2 January 1889. On 4 February 1889, very shortly after the family's arrival in Moreton Bay, Thomas Evans was admitted into the service of the Queensland Department of Public Instruction. He was appointed Head Teacher at Upper North Pine Provisional at Mt Pleasant. Rebecca Hitchins Evans was admitted into the service of the Queensland Department of Public Instruction on 1 October 1893.
