Sid Sakzewski, a motor racing enthusiast, purchased the Everdell dairy farm on Lake Kurwongbah on 27 September 1957. After the Strathpine Airstrip Motor Racing Circuit closed, members of the Queensland Motor Sporting Club raised the required funds from private sources to create the Lakeside International Raceway, Queensland’s first permanent purpose-built motor racing track. The new Raceway was completed and opened on Sunday 19 March 1961 with a Queensland Touring Car Championship meeting. Over 2000 people were in attendance. Events started at noon with a grand parade, followed by several races, a mannequin parade and the official opening by the Governor of Queensland, Sir Henry Able Smith. Although it was initially thought that the track would merely operate as a club circuit, within a year, Lakeside hosted an international race meeting at which Jack Brabham won the main event. The Raceway continued to operate until 2001 as a major motor racing circuit. During this forty-year period, it was the venue for a wide range of racing championships, including, on two occasions, the Australia Grand Prix.
