TitleHall built on the corner of Bestman Avenue and Cotterill Avenue Bongaree in 1962DescriptionTwo South African Families migrated from Rhodesia (today called Zimbabwe ) in 1961 to live and work on Bribie Island. They went about setting up a number of business interests including a newly built hall on the corner of Bestman Avenue & Cotterill Avenue. This hall opened its doors on the same day as the first issue of the Bribie Star Newspaper which was 29 June 1962. It was known as Hendon Recreation Hall. The name Hendon was derived from a combination of the first names of two of the senior partners in the Company, Henry Hart and Don Iverach. Entertainment on its first night of operation was free. It provided for dancing, roller skating and indoor bowls and was available for hire for other activities or meetings. It was immediately a success being very popular with both young and old. Unfortunately the senior partner in this Company Henry Hart perished in raging surf at Woorim on a Wednesday afternoon on 7 November 1963. As Hart died Intestate, his assets were frozen and the Company went into voluntary liquidation in 1964. This resulted in the loss of the new Recreation Hall. The hall was bought by Ben Tesch who transferred his Cinema Operation from the Church Of England Hall to it.
