Accession numberPRHM-0752Place madeFranceMeasurementsH149 x W90mmHistoryEmbroidered silk postcards were first made in 1900 and gained in popularity during the First World War. They depicted a variety of colourful images including flags, military insignia, flowers, birds, butterflies and messages in the languages of the Allied forces and Germany. Some cards featured embroidered panels in the shape of a delicate envelope. These envelopes held small printed cards and messages. They were embroidered by hand or machine on silk mesh strips, then cut and assembled in small factories.
