Swift, the commanding officer of the 1st Cavalry Division, United States Army, from July 1943 until February 1944. During this period, the Division's 15,000 American servicemen camped in an extensive area to the west of Strathpine, generically referred to as Camp Strathpine, which stretched from Kremzow Road Warner, to the North Pine River at Youngs Crossing, then northeast across Dayboro Road into what is now Frenchs Forest estate in Petrie. The commanding officer's hut was located in the Divisional Headquarters area, identified as Area 1, to the west of One Mile Creek, near what is now Ribblesdale Court, off Forgan Road, Joyner. (Building 1/176 on map of Camp Strathpine, 1945.) The huts in Camp Strathpine were later used by various Australian units then sold for removal after the end of the war.
