TitleMilking by hand, Samsonvale district, late 19th centuryDescriptionMilking the old way in the Samsonvale district during the late 19th century. Early settlers built their own homes from timber felled on their selections. Food crops for themselves and their horses were their first priority. As they became established, milking cows were introduced and the dairy industry was born. Although crops such as sugar, corn, bananas, pineapples, fodder plants and various vegetables were grown, dairy production eventually emerged as the principal production of the Pine Rivers Shire. After the construction of the North Pine Dam in the mid 1970s, some of the Shire's prime farming land was inundated by Lake Samsonvale.
