DETAILS
TitleThe rebel ship Minerva : Ireland to New South Wales, 1800 / Barbara Hall.DescriptionIn 1799, around 200 Irish men and women were transported to New South Wales in the ship Minerva. Many had been involved in the Irish Rebellion of 1798, which meant that the Minerva was carrying the largest contingent of rebels of any ship yet sent to New South Wales, with as yet unforseen consequences for the growing but fragile colony. Author Barbara Hall traces the lives of the ship's human cargo, in particular, describing their trials, which captivated Ireland at the time. Some had chosen voluntary exile, others were tried by court martial. There were rebel priests and urban criminals, and a scattering of free settlers. A few would become the colonial 'glitterati' of Sydney ; others would be involved in the first Irish rebellion on Australian soil, in September 1800. The stories of these men and women are integral to the story of colonial Sydney. Their voices are heard through court documents and letters they wrote to their families telling of their struggles with their new lives, leaving behind a fascinating legacy of that time.Personal authorHall, Barbara, 1942-ImprintCoogee, N.S.W. : Barbara Hall, 2015.LanguageEnglishDate2015Collationxvii, 253 pages ; 21 cm.ISBN9780958149952Bib. formatBooksNotesIncludes bibliographical references and index.
