Alan's parents were Samuel Marshal and Agnes Johnson. Agnes was a widow at the time of Alan's enlistment in 1914 and was living at St Aubyns Redcliffe. Alan was a well-known cricketer. Alan died of illness.
Every time Saturday comes it reminds me of cricket, but I was sadly reminded of it yesterday evening, when that fine ex-Surrey county cricketer, poor Alan Marshal, the Australian, breathed his last. Being in the same part of the hospital I was told directly it happened. He was very bad when he was first brought here. He belonged to the 15th Battalion Australian Contingent, and I am told he was very popular with his comrades. He had enteric fever, ...After going through all the fighting at the Dardanelles it is hard luck to be stricken with fever....
