Alexander was the first son of Alexander Cochran and Janet Hose who lived at Woodford, Queensland. The family immigrated to Australia in January 1908 and farmed in the Woodford area. Alexander was working as a sawmill hand and living at Woodford at the time of his enlistment in March 1916.
