Charles was the son of Robert Campbell and Jemima Espie. He married Cordeliah Farmer Johnson in 1914 and they had two children when he enlisted in 1916. The family was living in South Brisbane, Queensland, at the time and Charles was 25 years old and working as a bridge carpenter.
