He was 35 years, a widower, had three children, and was working as a blacksmith when he enlisted in August 1915. Charles first married Rose Ann Hyland in 1898. When she died in 1907, he then married her sister, Mary Jane Hyland in 1908. Mary died in 1912. Charles had moved to Caboolture after the death of his second wife prior to the war.
