He was working as a slaughter man when he enlisted on 16 November 1915. His unit embarked from Brisbane, on board HMAT Commonwealth on 28 March 1916, his brother Oscar was on the same ship. Two of Clifford's brothers enlisted, Oscar Oliver [4213] and Clarence Leslie [7051], all three brothers returned home.
