He married Nellie May Westacott in 1913 and they had two children when he enlisted on 4 August 1916. David was 30 years of age and living in Caboolture, Queensland, at the time of his enlistment. His unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board HMAT Medic on 12 December 1916 and returned to Australia on 19 April 1919.
