Donald's parents were Alfred Henderson Shields and Harriet Dunn and the Shields family lived in Woody Point prior to WWI. He attended Humpybong State School and was working as a draper when he enlisted in August 1915. His brother Charles (646) also enlisted and uncle Donald McCarty Shields served on the Redcliffe Shire Council.
