He was single, living at Toorbul and working as a fisherman when he enlisted in September 1916. Edward left with his unit from Brisbane in October only to be hospitalized when the ship reached Freemantle in November 1916. He re-embarked from Freemantle 29 January 1917. On his return to Australia Edward settled in Freemantle Western Australia where he married Doris Ethel May Donnelly in 1920.
