Edwin's parents were James Neild and Susannah Maria Long. He married Charlotte Parkinson in 1903. At the time of his enlistment in July 1915 he was 40 years old. Wife Charlotte was Postmistress at Redcliffe in 1919. Private (Lance Corporal) E Neild was awarded a Military Medal:
This N.C.O. was in charge of a party of Signallers, during an attack on the Hindenberg Line North of Bellicourt on September 30th, 1918, and by this skillful leadership, determination and devotion to duty the party established telephone communication between Battalion Headquarters and the Front Line. The task was made most difficult by the constant shelling and Machine Gun fire from the enemy. Later when the line was frequently broken by shell fire Lance Corporal Neild maintained its repair for a period of 24 hours until he was relieved. [Commonwealth Gazette Date 15th September, 1919]
