He was 25 years old and a butter packer at the time of his enlistment in January 1916. Elijah returned to Australia and was discharged in September 1917 suffering from Trench feet. Elijah married Mary Adelaide Maude McDonagh in November 1926 and they settled in Caboolture for a number of years.
