He was single and farming with his parents when he enlisted in February 1916. Ernest was hit by a shell at Zonneboke Road via Ypres while taking rations and guns up the line and died of wounds. Both of his brothers, Archibald Stewart [2166A] and Ronald James [3283] were also killed.
