At the time Errol enlisted Gertrude was running the Orient Boarding house above Suttons Beach at Redcliffe and father, James Louis, was serving as a Shire Councilor on the Redcliffe Shire Council. Errol was elected to the Redcliffe Town Council 1921, 1922, 1924 retiring before 1927. His younger brother was Denzil Cowen (2634) also enlisted. Errol married Eilene Maud Brown in 1919.
