George's parents were John Smiley and Margaret Benson. George was living at South Brisbane
his occupation was a lengths man when he enlisted on 10 March 1916 at Brisbane. He married his wife, Mellie Downer over in France on 15 February 1919. He returned home 1919. George had two brothers who enlisted as well, Albert Daniel [4596] and William Henry [4624]. All three brothers enlisted within days of each other and all embarked together on board HMAT A64 Demosthenes. They all returned home.
