Herbert's parents were Henry French and Jane Ann Whitworth. He enlisted 12 August 1915, Brisbane and was working as a carter. He embarked from Brisbane 5 October 1915 on board HMAT Warilda A69. After the war he lived at Ipswich and he married Ruby Mary Pashen at Brisbane in 1924. From 1925 to 1937 he was living with his wife at Oxley his occupation was a carter. Herbert died aged 80.Birth date06 December 1895
