Hugh's parents were Hugh Alexander Strain and Mary Eliza Storey. His father was a Dayboro pioneer, selecting land for dairying at Laceys Creek and then established a general store. Hugh enlisted on 28 September 1914 at Brisbane His unit embarked from Newcastle, New South Wales, 21 December 1914. In France April 1918 Hugh was admitted to hospital after being gassed.
