Hugh's parents were Hugh Hamilton and Mary Jane Hall both well-known pioneer families of the district. The Dayboro area, first referred to as Upper North Pine District, became known as Hamilton in 1875, having been named after Hugh Hamilton, Hugh's grandfather. From 1892 the district adopted the name of Terrors Creek. He was a dairyman when he enlisted on 14 August 1916 at Brisbane. Hugh died of wounds sustained near Lihu, Somme, France. Before the war he was a member of the Dayboro Rifle club and was also Secretary for a number of years.
