Born John, Jack was the son of Joseph Wilson and Eliza Jane Irving. His father had died in 1905 in Candelo, New South Wales, and his mother had moved to Woodford, Queensland sometime after his death. He was 35 years, working as a stockman and living in Woodford at the time of his enlistment in 1916. He returned to Australia and was discharged as medically unfit on 14 January 1918. Two of his brothers, James [3961], who was killed at Pozieres, and Edward [3504] had enlisted.
