James was the son of William and Mary Chalmers. He immigrated to Australia in 1889 and married Alice Joyce Fletcher in 1902. They had seven children and the family was living in Woodford, Queensland, when he enlisted in 1916 at the age of 44 years. James had requested that he not be sent overseas due to the ill health of two of his children.
