James was the third son of Alexander Cochran and Janet Hose who were living at Woodford, Queensland. The family came out to Australia in January 1908 and settled in Spring Valley, Woodford, Queensland. James was working as a labourer and living at Woodford at the time of his enlistment in January 1916. He was killed in action in March 1917 and buried in an isolated grave near Arras, later re-interred at Vaulx Hill Cemetery. An older brother, Alexander [5321], also enlisted.Death date20 March 1917
