James went off to enlist with his brother Colin Hector Smith [544] and M Walsh on July 6 1915. James was a butcher and served in the 5th Field Butchery until 1917 when he was transferred to the 35th Battalion. James returned in 1919. He married Violet Alice Entriken in 1938 and the couple settled at Twin Hills Clermont Queensland.
