Adam was the son of Thomas Mackay and Marie Elizabeth Hyland. He enlisted in March 1916 at age 31 and married Edith May Donkin, the daughter of Henry Donkin a well-known Redcliffe identity, In December that year. A 2nd Lieutenant, Adam was awarded a Military Cross:
For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when in charge of a support platoon during an attack. He successfully kept up communications between the various parties, promptly informing his C.O. of the different phases of the situation, quite heedless of enemy machine gun fire at less than 50 yards.
