John Charles O'Donnell was the son of Thomas Bryan O'Donnell and Catherine O'Sullivan. He was working as a labourer when he enlisted in Tambo, Queensland, in January 1915. His unit embarked from Brisbane on board HMAT Star of England on 8 April 1915 and he returned to Australia 30 January 1919. Next of kin nominated on his enlistment papers was Care of Harry Hodgson, Kilworth, Woodford, Australia.
