John's parents were John Joseph Collins and Naomi Lane. John left the Royal Navy as a Marine Steward to join the merchant service and enlisted on 5 May 1916 at Brisbane. John returned to Australia in 1919 and settled in Strathpine from 1920 to 1922 and then moved to Bunya 1922 to 1927. At Bunya, John was working as a labourer for David Walton Timms who served in the Boer War.
