John was the son of John McAtee and Mary Strachan who resided at Mt Mee, Queensland. He was single, working as a teamster and living at Mt Mee, Queensland at the time of his enlistment in August 1915.
John was wounded in an evening attack on heavily-defended tranches near Guidecourt on 1 February 1917 and was waiting close to the combat area until it was safe to be evacuated for treatment after the artillery barrage ended. A German counter-attack in the early hours of the morning of 2 February drove the Australian troops out of the contested trenches and captured approximately 20 of their wounded. John was taken to the nearby German Casualty Station (called Sachsenberg) for treatment but could not be saved.
