His father had died in November 1896 and his mother then married Francis Gustavus Hill in 1907. John was educated at Caboolture State School. He married to Emily Ruth Jones in April 1915 and was working as a labourer and living in Milton, Queensland at the time of his enlistment in November 1915. John suffered from ear trouble on his arrival overseas and after spending time in and out of hospital, he was returned to Australia and discharged in April 1916. Two older brothers, Thomas James [170] and Walter Henry [944] also enlisted.Birth date21 September 1893Death date12 October 1941
