Joseph was 44 years of age and farming at Mt Mee, Queensland, when he enlisted December 1916. His unit left in February 1917. Joseph returned to Australia and was discharged because of an old injury to his shoulder and senility (overage) in October 1918. He appears to have returned to live in Wamuran, Queensland for a time. A brother, William, who was living in Townsville was listed as next of kin.
