His mother had died in January 1898 and his father had married Alice Ann Woods Lomas later in the same year. They were living in Caboolture, Queensland when he enlisted in March 1916. At the time, Leslie was single, working as a labourer and living in Caboolture. While overseas he married Amy Goodwin on 11 February 1918 and they returned to Australia in September, 1919.
