Arthur's parents were John Wolno and Mary Ann Phillips. Arthur enlisted the first time on 1 February 1916 and served two months but was discharged due to requiring dental treatment. He enlisted again on 16 September 1916 and his occupation was farmer. He embarked from Brisbane on 27 October 1916 on the Marathon, with two of his friends from Strathpine, George Robert Taylor  and Alexander Sydney McDonald .
