Charles was born in Aberdeenshire Scotland. His parents were William Skene and Elizabeth Kennedy. He emigrated to Australia in 1885 and married Ellen Watson in 1906. He volunteered as a Munitions Worker in 1917 and worked at Kidbrooke Aeronautical Store in England as a carpenter and joiner.
