Richard was married to Myrtle Harris and they had four children when he enlisted. They were living at Durundur, Woodford, Queensland, where he was working as a grocer's assistant. Richard was discharged medically unfit on 29 June 1917 due to chronic Rheumatism. Richard had come to Australia with his parents, Charles Bateman and Jane Barrer, in 1884. His brother, Charles, was a policeman and living in Woodford at the time. Richard died at his residence at Haig Road Torwood aged about 82 years. His wife Myrtle had died approximately 12 weeks earlier.Death date21 October 1958
