Charles's parents were Ernest James Smith and Harriet Finamore. He was working as a butcher and living at Strathpine when he enlisted on 18 October 1915. He was wounded in action in November 1917 with a gunshot wound to his left hand requiring amputation of first, second and fourth finger. Discharged from hospital and returned to Australia in March 1918. On the 1919 electoral rolls Charles is living at Strathpine is occupation was a butcher.
