He had immigrated to Australia with his younger brother, Charles Albert on board the Aberdeen Liner Marathon leaving England on 4 December 1913. Roland was single and farming at Elimbah, Queensland when he enlisted in April 1916. His brother, Charles [4780] had enlisted in September 1915 and was killed in April 1916. After the war Roland married Mona Frances McGee on 8 January 1926.
