Thomas was single, working as a porter with the Queensland Government Railways and living in Caboolture, Queensland, at the time of his enlistment in July 1915. He received two recommendations while working as a runner for A Company and 49th Battalion headquarters. After the war Thomas was a Railway employee and married Phyllis Lillian Rose in June 1932.
