Edwin's parents were Edwin Phillips and Mary Jane Collins. Edwin attended Bunya State School and he was living at Strathpine with his mother when he enlisted on 27 December 1915, his occupation was a labourer. He was seriously wounded in France by a gunshot wound to his left arm on 17 March 1917 and was transported to a hospital in England. He was discharged from hospital 10 September 1917 and he returned to Australia.
