Thomas was the eldest son of William Turnbull and Ellen Jane Gartlan. His mother lived at Tentosburg, Landsborough, Queensland and his father had deserted the family. Thomas was single, his occupation being a sailor and living with his mother at the time of his enlistment in August 1914. Thomas died of wounds received in action at the Dardanelles on board the hospital ship HMAT Seang Choon whilst moored off Gallipoli and was buried at sea. His three younger brothers, John Andrew [232], Joseph Henry [3945], and William James [5482] were also to enlist. Joseph also died whilst serving overseas. One of his sisters, Ellen Jane married Arthur Henley [5381] also from Burpengary.Death date28 April 1915
