He had previously served 3 years with the Royal Warwickshire Regiment before he came to Australia in 1912 and also had enlisted in Australia in 1914 but refused to be inoculated. Thomas was single, living in Narangba, Queensland, and working as a labourer at the time of his re-enlistment in 1916. He was sent back to Australia for medical reasons in September 1917 and married Mary May Smith in December 1917.
