Walter was single and working as a carpenter when he enlisted in Lismore, New South Wales in December 1914. However, before embarking on 13 February 1915, he married Ethel Elizabeth Wright. As a result of receiving a severe gunshot wound to his shoulder and lower extremities at the Dardanelles, Walter was returned to Australia and was discharged in January 1916.
