William was the son of Alfred Bevis and Mary Jane Giddings who resided at Villeneuve, Queensland. He had immigrated with some of the family on board the Rippingham Grange arriving in Brisbane, Queensland, on 14 March 1912. He was single, working as a stockman and living in Villeneuve, when he enlisted in July 1915. Three other brothers, Alfred [40], Harry [49] and Richard [153] had enlisted after him. Both he and Richard left with the 31st Battalion which embarked from Melbourne on board HMAT Wandilla on 9 November 1915 and he returned to Australia on 1 July 1919.
