William's parents were John Sargent and Esther Greer. William attended North Pine State School. He enlisted twice first as Lionel William Bennett on 17 August 1915 New South Wales, and then on 8 September 1915 as William Edward John Sargent. He named his mother, Esther as next of kin, she was living at North Pine at the time. Mrs Hinks of Mulgoa, near Penrith was his employer at the time. William was killed in action during the attack on Doignies on 2 April 1917. According to the Battalion diary, 179 men from the 55th Battalion were killed or wounded on that day.
