William's father had died in 1895 and his mother had then married Samuel Sinnamon in 1908. William lived at Narangba, Queensland, with his mother and was working as a clerk when he enlisted in June 1915. He was seriously wounded in action and was returned to Australia in November 1917. William married Winifred Mary Hunter in 1918.
